America needed leaders who could react to enormous public pressure and meet the challenges of a nation moving towards a new modern era. Presidents Kennedy and Johnson had to deal with civil rights issues, the cold war, the Vietnam and the social upheaval of the turbulent sixties. Kennedy has a wonderful reputation, but was he really the better President? What types of issues dominated the sixties? The Cold War Heats Up The Election of 1960: THE FIRST TV DEBATES The incumbent president, Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, was not eligible to run again. The Republican Party nominated Richard Nixon, Eisenhower's Vice-President, while the Democrats nominated John F. Kennedy, Senator from Massachusetts. John Kennedy had two strikes against him, many thought. First, he was a Catholic, and many remembered how Herbert Hoover had beaten another Catholic, Alfred E. Smith, in 1928. Second, Kennedy faced a tough Republican opponent-Richard M. Nixon, who had been Vice President during the two Eisenhower Administrations. But four TV debates-the firs ever for Presidential candidates-helped Kennedy defuse the religion issue and take some of the luster off Nixon’s image. On TV, Nixon appeared nervous, sweaty, tired, defensive, and in need of a shave. Kennedy seemed calm, collected, sophisticated, and mature. Political analysts feel that the debates gave Kennedy the edge he needed to squeak through to victory. The Election of 1960 - Results Numerous factors explain why the election was so close.Kennedy gained since there was an economic recession which hurt the incumbent GOP, and he had the advantage of 17 million more registered Democrats than Republicans. Furthermore, the new votes that Kennedy gained among Catholics almost neutralized the new votes Nixon gained among Protestants. Kennedy's campaigning skills outmatched Nixon's. In the end, Nixon's emphasis on his experience carried little weight, and he wasted energy by campaigning in all 50 states instead of concentrating on the swing states. Kennedy used his large, well-funded campaign organization to win the nomination, secure endorsements, and with the aid of the last of the big-city bosses to get out the vote in the big cities. He relied on Johnson to hold the South and used television effectively." Kennedy - The New Frontier “Flexible response" -- Kennedy developed conventional military strategies to deal with difficult challenges around the world. The Peace Corps (1961) Proposed an "army" of young Americans to act as "missionaries of democracy." The Alliance for Progress(1961) "Latin American Marshall Plan" JFK gave $20 billion in aid to Latin America to help Latin American countries to close the gap between rich and poor thus quieting communist sympathies.
