Logitech 5.1 z506 75w review

TVs, computers, iPhones and gaming console all produce sound. The built in speakers are terrible choices to reproduce that sound for maximum enjoyment, especially when utilizing any surround sound feature. The Logitech Z506 was recently sent to us to test out, and I was pleasantly surprised at the performance for price this product sits at.

The Logitech Z506 set is a 5.1 surround sound speaker set that contains 5 satellite speakers and one sub woofer.? Rated at 75W of power, we had no trouble turning this up enough so it filled a room from wall to wall including room to spare on the dial.

Logitech 5.1 z506 75w review

Design: The set have 4 traditional tower structured speakers with one big driver and small tweeter at the top that are easy to stand on any desk.? The black finish on all parts of this set make it easy to match in any room or blend into the background of any TV or computer desk.? The Z506 comes with a double driver horizontal center speaker that can be placed at the bottom of a center monitor and has a pop out stand that makes it a bit more elegant of a centerpiece.? For me, moving away from a two speaker set on my desk and two speakers behind me to a three piece system with two speakers behind me made a world of a difference.? The sound from the center speaker alone makes a difference than just two speakers on the side.

The sub woofer comes in a skinny form factor from most wider subs that I have traditionally used.? I found this handy to have around since we are in a world today where everyone has more things to put next to each other, so it fit snug on the ground between my desk.? The back controls allowed for various AND multiple types of input which were great so I could keep a few things connected without having to replug in certain devices just to use the speakers.? The sub woofer also comes with a built in dial on the back to control the amount of “kick” you’d like.? In all honesty, I have to say I am not a fan of the dial on the back of the sub.? Most people keep the woofer on the ground, therefore to constantly duck down and turn the dial manually separate from the actual control of the overall volume which is on a towered speaker was annoying.? My current set up has the controls for the speakers and bass (plus the treble) built onto the main speaker, and it allows me to switch from gaming to surround mode (using just 2 speakers versus utilizing all 4).? If I were to propose any changes to this set up, it would have to be a dedicated sub woofer dial on the speakers that are in plain sight on the desk with the ability to switch between 2 or 5 satellites in use.

Performance: The biggest surprise after turning on a set that costs no more than $80 dollars on Amazon was the quality that it produced.? Producing loud sounds to fill a room is easy for speakers (it certainly was for this set) but the surround sound quality is what set this apart from other mid range speakers you could buy.

I highly recommend for anyone who listens to any type of media from their computer to check out the Logitech Z506.? It delivered on its promise for true surround sound whether it was listening to music from iTunes, watching a movie from the DVD drive or even gaming from an XBox 360.? I found myself plugging in my iPhone from time to time (in one of the multiple inputs- a handy feature) just to enjoy having music all around the room rather than only an iHome or something that produced sound from one location.

I thought it was a perfect addition to my home entertainment with the gaming on the 360…turning off the lights and playing on a big flat screen is one thing, but feeling like you’re getting shot at from behind is truly a new level of experiencing a game.

Overall: The holiday season is coming up and it is always tough to find a gift for the kids or techy that ‘has everything.’? They might have an Xbox or a Playstation, or a new computer with a fancy TV, but do they have the accessories to go with it? If you’re looking to give them a lasting gift that they could truly appreciate, without denting your wallet, I suggest you check out the Logitech Z506 set.? It’s affordable, and delivers true surround sound performance that can be utilized by multiple electronic devices.

For over a decade I've been using the Logitech Z640 5.1 system for PC gaming. It was an awesome system but after nearly 15 years of use the front right speaker worked intermittently and finally one of the back speakers cut out completely.

That system was so good that I wanted to just rebuy the same system and use it for the next 15 years but to my dismay Logitech no longer makes the model. It seems like the Z506 has taken the place of the old Z640 system. I thought for $65 that the system wouldn't be nearly as good and was extremely hesitant. I started looking into taking apart the sub on my 640 and trying to fix the issue. But after much debate I figured for $65 dollars I may as well buy this system and see if it was any good.

Now after having used it for over a week let me just say that this system is a steal for $65! The sound quality is crisp and excellent and the bass really hits when you turn up the sub. The sub is actually smaller on this system but has about the same power as my old system. I'm still getting used to having air blowing under my desk as the old system's sub didn't push air. But overall I'd say the entire system gets plenty loud and so far I have yet to crank them up much past half way.

I really only have three major issues with this system so far. The first issue is that the speakers are not mountable like the ones on my old system. The second issue is the placement of the volume knob on the right speaker. My old system placed the volume knob on the center speaker which was convenient because it's the closest speaker to the user. The old system also had a fader knob, a center speaker adjustment knob and a speaker fill toggle button for virtual surround of stereo sources. This new system puts it out of reach on my right speaker and only gives me a volume adjustment. The other adjustments can still be made with these speakers as long as your audio drivers support it. Realtek can adjust these things from the software side but having to open up my audio driver software to make the adjustments is clunky and not as convenient especially when fullscreen gaming while trying to adjust those things. Hopefully if Logitech designs a new system they will go back to putting adjustment knobs on the center speaker but only time will tell. But assuming their build quality is the same as it was on the system I got 15 years ago this system should last me quite a while.

My only other complaint which may be specific to set I got is that the right speaker randomly just stopped producing sound out of nowhere. I could still adjust volume of the other speakers using the knob on it but no audio would come out. Tried unplugging it from the sub and then plugging it back in but it still wouldn't work. Finally I unplugged the sub's power cable from the outlet and then plugged it back in and it started working again. Hopefully this will end up being a fluke and not a sign of some defect with the system itself that will get worse with time.

If you're looking for a good PC 5.1 system though I would definitely recommend getting this one. You can't beat the price. I was considering going with another 5.1 system on here with built in LED lights that was twice as much but I'm glad I stuck with Logitech. They make a quality product and because of this system the gunshots and explosions in Gears 5 sound awesome.

This system is PHENOMENAL. Tremendous sound for virtually a paupers price. The 4 satellites are identical in specs and size. The center speaker is differently shaped as you may expect, however, it's "hidden" base (which allows it to sit "flat" or it can be tilted upwards), is a very nice surprise and helps sound projection regardless of your computer set up. The sub-woofer is comfortable for hook up to almost any application you choose, home theater or computer and I'm sure one could (with the correct patch-cords), plug it into your cell phone headphone jack and it would BLOW YOU AWAY. Rich full sound.

CAUTION: You can blow the sub-woofer easily. When first turning the system on, make sure your volume knob on the right front speaker is turned to minimum (counter-clockwise). Select a song you think will give you full ranges bass and treble, preferably a vocal so you can set your system for voice as well. After you start the song in Windows Media Player, bring up your volume slowly to attain YOUR desired listening level. IN WINDOWS XP: On Windows Media Player, under the "Now Playing" tab is a small triangle (arrow) pointing down. It will bring up a pull down menu when clicked. That will give you the option to view "ENHANCEMENTS". Click that option and select "Graphic Equalizer". When the equalizer is present, you may tailor your frequencies to boost or negate certain frequency ranges. PLAY with them and listen to how the song you are listening to, changes sounds throughout the sound spectrum. IF YOU CHOOSE TO BOOST BASS ... the sub-woofer will attempt to accommodate your desires but the sound will become distorted if too much boost is used. This is true through out the available boost / cut controls. Once you have it set to your liking on that particular song, try other songs. Make minor adjustments to get the sound YOU like.

Technical stuff? (LOL): The speaker cables are a bit stiff. Unfolding them from their shipment is not difficult. It's just that I like a speaker cord that is like spaghetti noodles :)~. The wire is easier to work with when applying it to your system and having to run it through various portals so your wiring is not only protected but is not seen and looks COOL! (Makes yer system look professional). The speaker wire length is adequate for a computer system. HOWEVER, the left front speaker that I installed did not have enough cable to reach my computer. NO BIGGIE. I have a lot of RCA cable extenders so making this system fit my needs and where it was supposed to finally "rest" was not difficult. That was about the only "con" to the system.

The system has PLENTY of power to wake the neighbors >):)~. Be kind if you live in an apartment complex. I have 3 complete audio/video systems in my apartment. 2 Bedrooms and my living room. Bose, JBL, Polk, Yamaha, Nakamichi, Denon. I've tried almost every speaker that the average person would buy. I even had the Bose Spatial Control amp back in the early 80's and the 901's it was designed for. Bose 201's, 301's, 501's, Acoustimass systems etc. JBL for just raw power. Polk? ... surprise yourself, it rivals Bose easily for far less $$$ (and ya can get it here on Amazon :)~. Yamaha amps. I would go further but my point is: I KNOW sound. I KNOW quality. I had it then and I have it now. I'm running 2 computers side by side and do most all my music on them both. The Logitech Surround Sound Speakers Z506 was a compact welcome full sound addition to what I already listen too.

YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED !! Logitech did quite well at an extremely fair price for the quality of sound you get.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sounds good once configured properly

I have these speakers connected to my desktop which is about 3 years old. My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H with onboard Realtek audio. Out of the box connected to my system the rear speakers and the front center are way to low. I am using the Room Correction feature in Realtek's Audio Manager to adjust the levels until they are correct. Once set, the speakers sound great for movies and gaming. The sub is not very big though, so don't expect paintings to fall off the walls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing For The Price

This is a longgggg term review as these speakers were bought October 2017 and used almost daily ever since !

I was putting together a fun game room and decided to grab a decent quality but also easy on the pocketbook set of computer speakers that included a subwoofer as well as center. I went all out and decided to mount 4 of these speakers in the corners of the room against the ceiling as well as to wire LED multi-color lights behind each speaker. ( that is why some pictures are upside down and strange colors ) Mounting the speakers as I have done really gives the full sound right across the entire room, it's actually quite amazing to hear from such a small speaker set.

In all the different types of media, game, mp3, movie, general internet media these speakers have performed like a champ.

Very easy to connect, just plug and play. The computer output just plugs into the subwoofer's back "INPUTS" area and the speakers themselves just quickly plugged into the "SPEAKERS" area and with that you're all set up to listen to some great sound.

Logitech has been a tried and true brand with us as we've bought a number of computer speakers for us and as gift over the years. They always provide great quality sound with a small cost, if you can find their speakers on sale it is an even more amazing deal.

The volume is controlled by the one of the front speakers while bass can be controlled by the rear of the subwoofer. I quite like that the bass can be adjusted as with some models that is a feature that cannot be adjusted.

I would in a heartbeat recommend these to any friend as well as other shoppers here on Amazon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Soso

Reviewed in Canada on October 27, 2016

I was given to understand from the description that I could connect these to my tv which I can't the normal way. I have to use the headphone jack which is crap because it makes scratchy noises. Really disappointed. I may as well have just kept the sound system I already had which connected with the headphone jack instead of spending 140$ for the same sound I was getting with my cheaper speakers. With some adjustments made here and there in my tv sound and the speakers I can barely hear the scratchy noises, but it's still there.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING sound for an AMAZING price!

Reviewed in Canada on July 18, 2014

The package was delivered in a timely manner and was packaged as well as it could be. No damage to the product, although there were some scrapes and dents on the box itself (expected). Easy to setup, wires are colour coordinated, installation guide is simple. I have it hooked up to my TV through its audio output (3.5mm jack, green cable only). The speakers sound amazing! The bass is booming, although nothing compared to my Z-2300s! Volume is more than sufficient for a bedroom, I don't get why people are complaining. Rear speaker wires could be longer but I managed to set it up the best I can and still maintain a full sound. Overall, an amazing product for an equally amazing price. You can't go wrong with the Logitech Z-506, I highly recommend them for a bedroom. However, I do have one IMPORTANT POINT:

WARNING: The Logitech Z-506 only produces TRUE surround sound when connected to a device that can output 5.1 surround sound, which would require sound card capable of doing so. Therefore, I would have to connect it to my computer using all cables provided (green, black and orange), in order to achieve TRUE surround sound. Otherwise, the speakers output a VIRTUAL or EMULATED surround sound, which in my opinion is sufficient, and surprisingly pleasant.

The only slight con is that the ON/OFF button is fragile and sometimes it takes more than one push to turn it ON/OFF.

If you are looking to connect these to a TV and want TRUE surround sound, this is not for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound for the price

Got these for a very good price than what you pay for new packed box. These were nicely packed and every piece was individually packed in bubble wrap. I loved these for their price, totally worth.

\>The right speaker which has volume control and headphone out jack has a proprietary connector which looks like vga cable and connects to the subwoofer. This accepts analog signal only so there are three standard line in cables with 3.5mm audio jacks. The speakers connect to the back of subwoofer using coaxial RCAs. \> Long enough cables \> were packed nicely \> good sound as per the price \> arrived on time \> all speakers work fine \> I use these to play pc games and they sound good with accurate positioning. Now, that depends how well you have positioned your speakers and what kind of audio device you have and what settings you have selected in the media player or game options. \> I use these for Hitman, Tombraider, Arma3 and Witcher3 and they sound good. \> The subwoofer is decent as per its size and price and has its limitations but again I dont expect much for this price. \> The subwoofer has all the connectors in the back where every speaker connects. \> The front right speaker has the volume knob, power LED and headphone out as shown in photos. \> I wish they came with a desktop control like the Logitech Z313s which gives you a lot of flexibility as you could put the speakers in any direction and away from the computers but now you have to keep the right one closeby atleast.

Are Logitech Z506 speakers good?

Although it isn't without its faults, we were still impressed with the Z506 set and its superb audio quality. It costs slightly more than the older X-530, but it has a greatly improved design and everything we played on it sounded fantastic. You'll need to spend a lot more to get a better set of 5.1 speakers.
