Other có thể đi được với danh từ đếm được số ít khi phía trước nó có những từ chỉ số lượng là “một” như every, any, one.
○ every other student
= mỗi người sinh viên khác○ any other student
= bất kỳ một người sinh viên nào khác○ one other student
= một người sinh viên khác
Do đó, every other day là hoàn toàn đúng về ngữ pháp. Nó có nghĩa nôm na là “mỗi ngày khác” nhưng chính xác là “hai ngày một lần”.
○ I go there every other day.
= Tôi đến đó hai ngày một lần.
Không được dùng another vì another nghĩa là “một”, trong khi đó phía trước có every đã mang nghĩa là “một” rồi. Giống như không thể nói every a student được.
Muốn dùng another thì ta phải bỏ every đi.
