Judgments about authenticity are based on assessments of the origins, completeness and internal integrity of a document. They may also draw from the consistency and coherence that exists between a particular source and others in the same context or of the same type.

Which type of historical criticism determines the authenticity of the source?

External criticism refers to the authenticity of the document. Once a document has been determined to be genuine (external criticism), researchers need to determine if the content is accurate (internal criticism).

How do you check the authenticity of a historical source?

Relevance: Does the evidence relate to or bear directly on the claim being made?.
Recency/Currency: Has the situation described by the evidence changed? ... .
