This product is already an old model on retailer’s shelves, but what makes an attractive purchase for this year is its ability to trade blows with other competitive gaming displays at a foreseeable reduced price point while packing the reliability of which makes LG great. Design and FeaturesThe LG 24GM77 sports a minimalistic or industrial design which a lot of enthusiasts including some of our members here at Monitornerds prefer over gaudy designs. But if you look at the rear, there are red accents which hint that this model does have a pedigree for gaming. This concept is widespread through LG’s gamer-centric products, and despite being hidden from plain sight, we still have a high regard for it. The 24-inch screen has a discrete AG coating which does a good job at deflecting light, so your gaming sessions are mostly glare-free. Another aspect we appreciate with this model is its excellence in ergonomics, since you can swivel, pivot, tilt and raise the 8.5lb cabinet without any trouble. You also get a pair of built-in speakers for minor audio appreciation, but we still think a separate set will serve you better. The .6-inch thin bezels provide unobstructed viewing of the 144Hz display, except for a prominent control panel at the bottom. This feature contains OSD selection keys including hotkeys for the Black Stabilizer and Dynamic Action Sync features of this product. You can also easily access each image preset via this controller which gives the LG 24GM77 its unique face. Like some of LG’s modern TVs, you also get a jog dial to select menu shortcuts, swap between inputs or turn this gaming monitor on and off. Lastly, this excellent product is well equipped with a plethora of signal input options, since it includes a DisplayPort, two HDMI slots, a DVI and D-Sub connector, plus three USB 3.0 receptacles. Display and PerformanceThe LG 24GM77 sports a 1080p TN panel with a refresh rate of 144Hz and a pixel response of 1ms. This model only provides a gamut coverage of 72% which is quite low when compared to some of LG’s vibrant monitors like the LG 27UD68-P, but that is a natural limitation of this panel tech. However, for games and basic media viewing, 72% isn’t so bad since you still get decent saturation and vibrancy in any title you play. This early adaptation of gaming monitors does not include Freesync certification since it was introduced before AMD’s VRR tech invaded the digital space. Even so, 144Hz at 1080p is relatively easy to run even on midrange GPUs. Still, the fast refresh rate does a decent job at handling tears if your FPS is high enough. However, the LG 24GM77 comes with the company’s proprietary Dynamic Action Sync and Clear Motion 240 feature. You can’t use both options at the same time, but we reckon that DAS combines better with the 144Hz limit since it reduces overall input lag to a little over 10ms. That alone makes this monitor worthy for fast-paced gaming in genres such as shooters and racing simulation. While the LG 24GM77 is fairly accurate in color reproduction, grayscale and contrast performance is decent at the most. You can increase black levels with the help of the Black Stabilizer preset. Setting it to high will decrease emphasis on blacks while enhancing the gray shades produced by objects such as shadows. Setting this feature to low will produce rich dark colors, but other shades may appear a bit too whitewashed. Since the LG 24GM77 is equipped with a TN panel, viewing angles could be better. What we liked about it is its decent panel uniformity. The backlighting and color fidelity only suffers if you view this product off-center or when you tilt or swivel the monitor. Once you have set a comfortable angle, the LG 24GM77 is a pretty solid gaming monitor. ConclusionThe LG 24GM77 offers a robust performance making it worthy of consideration if you want a 144Hz 1080p gaming display. It does come with limitations brought about by its TN panel, but we think it still provides a satisfying performance with its excellent feature set for $475.00. Even if there is a compatible DisplayPort receptacle, unfortunately, you don’t get Freesync with the LG 24GM77. There are tutorials on the web which could help you work around this, but your mileage will vary. This model is already discontinued since it is about to get an updated version, but we think it is still a solid purchase if its price goes for a deep dive when bought used or at a bargain bonanza.
