How do we determine the most popular name given to girls this year? Every year the Social Security Administration releases its most popular baby names list. Each year they collect their data based on applications for Social Security cards.

All baby name data is reported from the “First Name” field on the Social Security card application. The given name must be at least two characters long in order to be included. Names with fewer than five occurrences in any geographic area are not included.

According to the most recent Social Security Administration data, these were some of the most notable names rising in popularity for 2023 :

  • Wrenlee is the fastest-growing girl name in popularity. It moved up 708 spots in popularity from position 1420 to 712 in just one year!
  • Other girl names with the largest positive change include Neriah, Arlet, Georgina, Amiri, Arleth, and Winona.

In 2023, the letter “A” was the most popular girl name trend! EIGHT of the top ten girl names end with “A” – Olivia, Emma, Amelia, Sophia, Isabella, Ava, Mia, and Luna! And a majority of the fastest-growing girl names started with the letter A as well!

Three-syllable girl names also seem to be on the rise, with many of the top 100 girl names following this pattern.

Girl Names on the Decline in 2023

According to the most recent Social Security Administration data:

  • Tatiana had the most significant decline, dropping 287 ranks from 993 to 1280
  • Other girl names with the most notable drop-offs include Alaiya, Jaylene, Aarna, Zoie, and Paityn.
  • Girl names ending in Y also declined in popularity with Ainsley, Kaisley, and Kassidy all dropping in 2023.

One of the most interesting girl name trends in 2023 was the decline in patriotic girl names. Both Justice and Liberty dropped over 100 spots on the 2023 baby girl name list.

Karen, which was not terribly popular to begin with, also dropped significantly, presumably because it became a popular meme and derogatory term for an entitled and out-of-touch woman.
