I. Ph�n biệt: require [đ�i hỏi, cần] - request [xin]
To require: Khi muốn diễn tả một điều y�u cầu, một điều đ�i hỏi, hay bắt buộc, tiếng Anh c� động từ to require, danh từ l� requirement. Cũng c� nghĩa l� điều cần đến hay cần phải c�=need.
[1] Require nghĩa l� cần hay bắt buộc
- This matter requires careful consideration=vấn đề n�y cần x�t kỹ.
[Sau require c� thể d�ng t�c từ trực tiếp direct object. Trong th� dụ tr�n direct object l� consideration.]
- Most house plants require watering=những c�y cảnh trong nh� cần tưới. [Direct object l� danh động từ gerund: watering.]
- What material do you require [=need] to complete the job?=Anh cần vật liệu g� để ho�n th�nh c�ng việc?
- The subpoena requires [=orders] you to appear in court=Tờ tr�t bắt buộc �ng phải c� mặt ở to� �n.
[2] Mẫu c�u require + that. The municipal regulations require that dogs be kept on leashes in public areas=Luật lệ [qui định] th�nh phố bắt buộc ch� phải c� d�y x�ch khi ở nơi c�ng cộng.
[3] Mẫu c�u: To be required + to do=> You are required by law to wear seat belts=Luật bắt buộc �ng/b� phải đeo d�y nịt an to�n khi l�i xe.
[4] Required c� thể l�m adjective hay past participle, v� trong trường hợp n�y th� required đi trước danh từ hay sau động từ be.
- The bill failed to get the required votes=Dự luật bị b�c v� kh�ng đủ số phiếu bắt buộc.
- The book is required reading for this class="Cu"ốn s�ch l� cuốn bắt buộc phải đọc trong lớp n�y.
- Required courses are courses students must take; for example, English composition=Những lớp bắt buộc l� lớp sinh vi�n bắt buộc phải theo; th� dụ luận văn tiếng Anh.
- Children should know what is required of them=Trẻ em n�n biết c�c em phải l�m những g�.
[5] Require c� thể theo sau bởi một động từ chưa chia c� to: I require him to help me=T�i cần anh ấy gi�p t�i. Hay mệnh đề that-clause theo sau bởi một subjunctive. [I require that he help me].

* Requisite=điều kiện tất yếu, đồ d�ng cần thiết, a must, a sine qua non. Past experience is a requisite [a sine qua non] for this job=L�m việc n�y cần c� kinh nghiệm.
* Prerequisite=m�n cần c� trước. Prerequisite for Calculus II is Calculus I=Phải đ� học qua m�n to�n Calculus I rồi mới đưọc ghi t�n m�n to�n Calculus II. Good computer skills are a prerequisite for this job=L�m việc n�y ứng vi�n cần biết c�ch sử dụng m�y vi t�nh.
To request=y�u cầu, xin, thỉnh nguyện, to ask. Danh từ a request.
[1] To request + direct object. To request more information, call this number=Muốn biết th�m tin tức, xin gọi số n�y.
[2] To request something FROM someone. You must request permission from a teacher to leave class="Mu"ốn ra khỏi lớp phải xin ph�p gi�o vi�n.
[3] Request that + subjunctive
- The students requested that the school provide more computers=Học sinh y�u cầu nh� trường cung cấp th�m m�y vi t�nh. [That school provide: provide kh�ng c� s v� ở subjunctive mood]
- The government requests that troops be withdrawn=Ch�nh phủ y�u cầu r�t qu�n.
[4] Request + to + verb. Guests are requested to wear formal attire=Quan kh�ch được y�u cầu ăn mặc trịnh trọng.
Ph�n biệt require v� request:
=> Require diễn tả một điều từ b�n ngo�i bắt buộc ta phải tu�n theo.
- Nhu cầu & y�u cầu=needs, requirement. Thỏa m�n nhu cầu=to meet someone�s needs. The product meets all requirements set by the government=sản phẩm đ� đ�p ứng tất cả những đ�i hỏi [=y�u cầu] do ch�nh phủ đặt ra.
- Y�u cầu=to require. Y�u cầu qu� vị giữ trật tự=You are required to be orderly.
- Chữ y�u cầu, nếu l� danh từ, cũng c� nghĩa điều cần phải đạt được trong một việc n�o đ�. Th� dụ: �ạt y�u cầu về chất lượng=meet the required norms for quality and quantity.
- Mục đ�ch y�u cầu của c�ng việc: the aim and requirement of the work. Ph�n biệt với chỉ ti�u=target, norms, quota.
=> Khi muốn diễn tả lời cầu xin, lời y�u cầu, lời thỉnh nguyện, ta d�ng request, nghĩa l� điều tự ta mong muốn c�.
- Put in a request for a transfer=L�m đơn xin thuy�n chuyển.
- Did you request a new printer?=C� phải anh xin một m�y in mới kh�ng?
- He requested her hand in marriage=Anh ta cầu h�n với c� ta.
