The Anker PowerCore II 20000 battery pack strikes a good balance between power and size. For $49.99, the 20,100mAh battery boasts a pair of USB-A ports for simultaneous fast charging. It lacks USB-C for charging MacBooks and other devices like Anker's PowerCore+, but it's also smaller, lighter, and less expensive. That makes it a solid travel companion if you don't need to power USB-C devices.
Design and Features
The PowerCore II is a rectangular slab of textured polycarbonate that measures 6.7 by 2.5 by 0.8 inches [HWD] and weighs 11.7 ounces. It's lighter than the Griffin Reserve Power Bank [6.3 by 3.2 by 0.7 inches, 13.6 ounces], as well as most other batteries in the 20,000mAh range. You can potentially carry it in a pocket, thought if portability is your primary concern, you'll need to look to a less capacious battery like the Xiaomi Mi Power Bank Pro [5.1 by 2.9 by 0.5 inches, 7.0 ounces].
A circular power/status button sits on the top, near the charging ports. It's ringed by white LEDs that show charging status. Most devices begin charging automatically, but for those that don't, a long press of the button will get it started.
The ports on the top edge consist of two USB-A ports for output and one micro USB port for charging the battery itself. One of the USB-A ports and the micro USB port are enabled for Anker's proprietary Power IQ 2.0 standard, which is able to identify any connected device and adjust voltage output to 5V, 9V, or 12V automatically, similar to Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 standard. Using a power meter to measure voltage, we found the port charged the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 at 9V/1.8A and the Apple iPad at 5.1V/2.5A. When charging the battery itself with a Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 adapter, it also took advantage of Power IQ 2.0 to vary the voltage and charge faster.
Pass-through charging is not supported, so you won't be able to charge the battery itself while other devices are charging.
Performance and Conclusions
The 20,100mAh PowerCore II has ample juice for charging phones and tablets repeatedly, making it an ideal travel companion. In testing, it added 28 hours, 5 minutes to an iPad streaming full-screen video over Wi-Fi at maximum screen brightness. Unsurprisingly, that's right on par with the PowerCore+ USB-C [28 hours, 34 minutes], but for some reason slightly behind the 18,000mAh Griffin Reserve [30 hours, 4 minutes], possibly due to differences in power efficiency.
The Anker PowerCore II 20000 offers plenty of juice, dual USB-A ports, and fast charging in a relatively small form factor. It won't fit in your pocket if you wear skinny jeans, however.
