Spotify is among the most popular music streaming services due to its multiplatform support, vast music library, and multiple tiers of service, including an ad-supported free plan. To avoid hearing ads between songs, you'll need one of Spotify's Premium plans. And if you have a household with more than two people, the most cost-effective and convenient choice is probably Spotify's Family plan.

The Spotify Family plan includes six premium accounts, enough for most large families. All the accounts are ad-free. The plan also comes with a few perks designed expressly for families, including the ability to block explicit music.

  • Family Mix is an automated playlist that combines tracks each member of the plan listens to. The playlist is updated regularly.
  • Spotify Kids is a separate mobile app designed just for children. It includes singalongs and playlists curated specifically for young listeners.

Spotify Family costs $15.99 per month. If you take advantage of all six accounts, that's about $2.70 per user, which is substantially more cost-effective than a standard Individual account, which is $9.99 per month [or even the Student membership, which is $4.99 per month].

There is no minimum time required to keep a Family plan; you can start and cancel at any time, though you will be charged for an entire month at a time. If you've never subscribed to any Spotify Premium plan before, you can get a 30-day free trial when you sign up. If the Family plan isn't for you, you can cancel without paying anything as long as you terminate the plan before the first 30 days is over.

To subscribe to a Spotify Family plan, go to the Spotify plans page. Here you can directly compare each of the four plans Spotify offers: Individual, Duo, Family, and Student. [A couple without children will probably prefer the Duo Plan for $12.99 per month.]

You can review the plans and sign up for one on Spotify's website. Dave Johnson

When you're ready, click Get Started under Family. Then log into your existing Spotify account if necessary [even your free account is fine] or click Sign Up For Spotify and create an account.

If you already have a Premium account, such as a $9.99 per month Individual Plan, your plan will be automatically upgraded to Family when you complete the sign-up process.

Spotify has launched a new premium membership for couples who want to split the cost of a monthly subscription—and a share of what music gets played in the car or apartment.

The new membership, dubbed Spotify Premium Duo, costs $12.99 a month and gives two people their own separate Premium accounts in which to collect songs, playlists, podcasts, and so on. [The price point falls just slightly below the $14.99-per-month family plan, which can be applied to up to six accounts.] Additionally, both users will get access to a regularly updated Duo Mix playlist that combines the couple’s tastes. Spotify says this will allow partners to discover audio they both love.

“Premium Duo includes our extensive music and podcast catalog and everything users love about Spotify Premium,” Alex Norström, Spotify’s chief freemium business officer, said in a statement. “With two individual Premium accounts, you can both listen independently, uninterrupted, and get all of your personalized playlists and features tailored just for you.”

Spotify says each user must reside at the same address to be eligible for the Premium Duo account. The shared location will allow users who had been relying on Spotify’s free, ad-supported listening to get the first month of Premium Duo free.

Existing Spotify Premium subscribers can switch to the new subscription in the “Account” page on Spotify’s website. The current Premium account will be imported to Premium Duo, along with saved music, podcasts, playlists, and recommendations, Spotify says.

As it rolls out new features for Premium, including a recently launched shared DJ mode, Spotify continues to amp up its overall investment in audio—not just music, but focused on the podcasting space. The Swedish streaming company recently signed a deal with Warner Bros. and DC Comics to develop scripted superhero-based podcasts, as well as a reported $100 million deal for the exclusive rights to Joe Rogan’s podcast.

[Pocket-lint] - Spotify originally launched its family plan in 2014, but a lot has changed since then.

When it first arrived, you paid the same amount per month for two users as you almost now pay for six. New features are regularly added too, allowing Spotify Premium for Family to compete with the family plans from on Apple Music and YouTube Music. The aim of a family plan is to have one bill covering multiple users, with each individual able to control their own Spotify account.

This is everything you need to know about Spotify Premium for Family including what it gets you, where it's available, how you can sign up, and what features are offered.

Spotify's Premium for Family plan costs £16.99/month, or $16.99/month for up to six Premium accounts per family. All six users must live at the same address.

It previously cost £14.99/$14.99 a month, which was the same as Apple Music's Family plan for up to six people per family, but Apple Music is now cheaper compared to Spotify's new pricing.

Spotify's Premium for Family Plan provides family members with access to millions of songs for just one price, payable on a single bill.

It also allows each family member to operate separate accounts so that everyone gets their own playlists, saved music, personal recommendations, and the full Spotify Premium experience.

The Premium experience includes the ability to listen offline to the millions of songs, as well as play any song, anytime, on any device. There are no restrictions and no ads.

There are parental controls so parents can set explicit content filters for family members so they are always in charge of what they can - and what they can't – hear, and there are also features like Family Mix that is a regularly updated playlist of songs you all like. There's also a Spotify Kids app that is exclusive to Premium Family.

You can learn more about the Spotify Family Plan and Premium experience from Spotify's website.
