FX-Audio Tube-01

Préamplificateur à Tubes 6J1 Stéréo Noir

Pre tube-01 6j1 đánh giá năm 2024

The 6J1 FX-Audio TUBE-01 tube buffer preamplifier is a smart little tool to improve the sound of a desktop DAC or HiFi installation. With a gold-plated stereo input and output, it will be a quality companion coupled with a Class D power amplifier to restore dynamics and sound to any installation that lacks liveliness. At the proposed price, this device has qualities that are usually absent in this category.

Moreover, this preamplifier does not have the caricatural sound of the classic low-midrange tube productions. On the contrary, the terms transparency, dynamics, musical delirium, sound matter are the ones that immediately come to mind. An excellent introduction for any enthusiast looking for an affordable, high quality tube preamplifier.

This preamplifier has a high gain, so it will boost a slightly low source. When using a fixed 2V source, the volume knob can be very sensitive, the gain of 1 being obtained in the first third of the potentiometer stroke.

I've had the FX-Audio Tube-01 for a few weeks now and overall, I really like it a lot (with a few caveats).

For reference I'm using the Tube-01 in the following configuration: Topping D50 DAC > FX-Audio Tube-01 > Marantz Model 15 Amplifier > Klipsch Heresy Speakers

Let me start off by saying that I did replace the tubes with the Riverstone Audio GE JAN 5654W tubes that so many reviewers mention and YES, they do make difference for the better.

The stock tubes that came with the device could likely be described as neutral, and for me, didn't seem to offer much of anything discernible from original signal.

In comparison, the 5654Ws (when used in the Tube-01) simply sound fuller, richer and slightly euphonic. What does that mean? Well it sounds like a more prominent response in the low-end and low-mid range (think the opposite of a weak, tinny sound) with the slightest presentation of even low order harmonics (google it) which can give the music a very pleasant, rich sound.

Overall, it's a very nice and enjoyable sound that's pretty easy to get lost in.

Now, with that said I should mention the biggest thing that I don't like. HISSsssssss! Unfortunately, there is hiss / white noise generated by this unit.

Prior to including this little guy, my setup was for all intents and purposes completely silent, even when holding my ear up to the tweeter horn of the Heresy’s.

However, I should also mention that the Heresy’s are very efficient speakers (doesn't take much power to drive them) and most users with speakers of "normal" efficiency may never even notice the extra hiss / white noise.

I should go on to say that the white noise isn't terrible, and truthfully, I really can't hear it from my seated listening position. But, the fact that it's there now, and wasn't before, really gets to my OCD side.

The other thing I don't care for is the lack of a gain defeat. So, to confirm this is NOT a unity gain device - there IS a gain boosting circuit. What does this mean? Well, effectively, the signal going in is going to be louder coming out. The volume knob does give you control over this of course.

What's the problem then? Well, in my setup the DAC is already outputting at line level. So, having anything beyond that is completely unnecessary and is only including additional circuitry and noise (likely a large part of the hiss I'm getting). FYI - There is a Tube-01J (in japan) that has a gain defeat switch and is less noisy but I've yet to find a reasonably priced importer.

Of lesser importance (only because audio devices are mostly meant to be heard) is the fit and finish. I have to say this thing is just beautiful. It's very smartly sized, laid out well, and is just the right weight as to not be dragged about by the various cables plugged into it. If I *had* to find something to complain about... maybe a switch to turn off the LEDs under the tubes? :)

So, what's my overall take?

I really, really like it. However, I would like to build a box that would allow me to easily switch this device in and out of circuit. Why? Well, there are moments when I want a "pure HIFI" experience (which the Topping D50 DAC straight to the Marantz Model 15 amp provides quite impactfully!). And, well, there are times when I want a more laid back "just feels so good" experience (which the Tube-01, with the 5654W tubes, provides quite wonderfully).
