"Working in the same space I cut hair a year ago, and partnering up with my team whom I am blessed to be in friendship with for over 20 years, allows me to embrace my roots as a hairstylist and bring a meaningful service, founded on passion and care to the neighborhood."

One of those people is Ken Paves, hairstylist to the rich and famous, including David and Victoria Beckham, Oprah Winfrey, Eva Longoria, Diana Ross and Julianne Moore.

The 24-year-old Moroccan hairstylist had just left a nightclub where she had been drinking and clubbing with friends when the 23-year-old Jordanian inspector ordered the taxi carrying them to pull over.

The hairstylist's comments remind me of the term 'Gender Opportunism,' a typical behaviour seen in some individuals who try to target a specific gender to make the most of the situation.

Which is the correct spelling of these words: hairstyle or hair style? hairstyling or hair styling? hairstylist or hair stylist?

The correct would be 'hair style' but I think you would find the 'hairstyle' is accepted just as much.

Hairstyle, hairstyling, hairstylist per AP stylebook, OED.

Sorry, I gave my first answer on a drunken hunch. Of course, hairstyle is correct.

Hi there! Is it a "hair stylist" or a "hairstylist" [person]? I incline myself to the "hairstylist".

Thanks in advance, interwrit.

  • Both are commonly used. As is quite common for words that become fused, it started as two words but the one word version is now more, ahem, common, in printed books, at least [from the ngram viewer].

Note : the ngram viewer is generally quite handy for addressing usages of words and phrases - it does not handle punctuation very well, though.

Google News reports 3,860 for "hair stylist" and 3,370 for "hairstylist". Perhaps more relevant, it suggests "hair stylist" in response to a search for "hairstylist", but not the other way round, suggesting that it thinks the two-word version is the norm.

From my very limited experience, a more common term is "stylist", where the context determines clearly that the stylist is working with hair.

Interesting - I wonder how the google algorithm comes up with its preferences for "Did you mean ....?" The ngram data and the news citations are different databases, but agree, in general, that both are commonly used although they may differ in which is "leading"- hard to assess the intermediate morph [hair-stylist] [It may take two hair-stylists to untangle ]
