Chrome video stops when switching tabs

Okay so I m trying to use OBS to record my university live lectures that are being streamed. So I m using a "windows capture " mode, I select the chrome tab in which the university lecture is going on live. In the meantime I m doing my separate stuff not watching the tab in which the lecture is going on. So for an example I open a new chrome tab separately watching youtube, keeping the "lecture tab" recorded. But when I do that, the screen in the "lecture tab" freezes and it doesnt display the video UNLESS I constantly keep the "lecture tab" open on my screen.

Is there any way I can resolve this issue or do I HAVE to have the windows I m recording open on my screen for it not to freeze the video.

This is a Chrome thing, videos in non-visible tabs are not rendered to save resources.

When you have a lot of tabs open, Chrome can be really slow. The situation is even worse when you change tabs and have to wait while the browser downloads the entire page from the Internet. Now, just imagine that you are looking through several tabs to find the one you want and now they all have to reload just because you clicked on them!

By default, if it's using a lot of memory, Chrome purges the contents of some background tabs from RAM to conserve system resources.  When you click back onto those tabs, the browser has to reload them because they have been erased from memory. Fortunately, you can disable this purge and reload process in a few simple steps.

1. Navigate to chrome://flags/#automatic-tab-discarding.

2. Set Automatic tab discarding to Disabled.

You may also want to change the setting for Offline Auto-Reload Mode to Disabled. That feature causes Chrome to automatically load pages that failed to load because of a bad or non-existent Internet connection. However, by the time you get a better Internet connection, you may not even be interested in seeing those pages anymore.

As the title suggests, if a video is playing and I open a new tab, it stops playing. It only plays when I am on that tab. Any solutions on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Update:

I was able to resolve this issue. There are 3 causes for why this issue may occur:

Extensions: 1st make sure that it isn't any extension that's causing this issue. Heard that Enhancer for YouTube might cause this issue.

The issue isn't with FF. It's with the Enhancer for YouTube addon. There's a setting called "Pause videos playing in background tabs when a video starts playing in the foreground tab". For some reason when using this addon with the other browsers this box isn't ticked by default. Untick this box and you're good to go. This thread can be closed.

Firefox is throttling the connection of background tabs: In my case, this was not the issue as both the recommended settings in the solution were already enable for me by default. In any case, I'll leave the solution if this is the case down below.

It's possible that Firefox is throttling the connection of background tabs. This is usually done to improve performance, since [typically] tabs that are not active aren't visible to the user.

You can try setting the network.http.throttle.version preference on the about:config
to 1and then restarting Firefox. If that doesn't help, setting the network.http.throttle.enable preference to false and restarting Firefox may help.

Blocking autoplay until in foreground: This seemed to be the issue in my case, here's the solution below.

You can look at media.*autoplay prefs on the about:config page media.block-autoplay-until-in-foreground = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Almost all of us spend hours on YouTube daily. But a lot of people who watch YouTube videos in their Chrome browser are facing a problem which has made their video-watching experience extremely pathetic. The problem is that YouTube video pauses when you switch tab in Chrome. For example, I love to play YouTube videos in the background while I surf Reddit or Twitter. But I lose my mind when YouTube video pauses after I switch tab to some other website. Fortunately, there are some ways to fix YouTube video pausing when tab switched.

YouTube Videos Keep Pausing When I Switch Tab in Chrome

Open Google Chrome and type the following in the address bar and hit enter:

chrome://flags

You will see an option named pause-background-tabs here. Make sure this option is set to “Disabled”. This option will prevent from YouTube videos from pausing even when you switch to another tab.

If the above mentioned solution doesn’t work for you, let us know in the comments. We will get back to you with another solution that will make it easier for you to play YouTube videos in the background while you open new tabs. The videos will not pause when you switch the tab.
