Should i get a gaming laptop for college reddit

So, I just need help with a laptop. I have a gaming desktop to play demanding games, but I just want maybe something cheaper than an 1800$ gaming laptop I have found.
Personally, I want something great for college, and low tier gaming [Minecraft, classic battlefront I|II, Roblox, and Wolfenstein ET].

I’m looking at getting a new laptop for college, and I’m primarily deciding between whether I want a gaming laptop or a 2-in-1. Right now, I use an old Macbook for light schoolwork, and my primary PC is a powerful desktop [16GB RAM, unlocked i5, RX 480 8GB GPU] that I use for both gaming and heavy creative use [e.g. Photoshop, Lightroom].

I see several benefits and drawbacks to both. A 2-in-1 will be much smaller [thinner] and more conducive to carrying around from class to class. I also believe I will get a much higher quality screen out of a 2-in-1. Also, a 2-in-1 will still be able to handle my heavy creative use and schoolwork. It will also probably have a better battery life. The primary drawback will be that I will be rendered largely unable to play my PC games. While I do have an Xbox One and plan to take it with me, I generally prefer to play on my PC.

A gaming laptop will let me play my games and still have the power for my creative and school-related usage, but at the cost of size/portability, screen quality, and battery life.

I’m a bit torn. You guys know a lot more about laptops than I do, I’m sure. What do you think?

I'm going to get a laptop soon since I'm going to Polytechnic. I have done my research on previous Roadshows and look up on the laptops provided. I have seen specifications and qualities of other laptops. I have known that popular brands like ASUS have good qualities. For example, the TUF laptop lineup from ASUS provides great durability and it can even perform well regardless of the tasks [gaming & work]. Or even Lenovo Legion, it's great advantage is it's acceptable budget-performance ratio. I'm not sure whether I can use my own laptop for personal use. So, I'm seeking advice from this community. My concern is that the Polytechnic Roadshow have very limited options. Usually laptops with low prices, some professional laptops and few gaming laptops. I prefer to get my laptop from retailers such as Harvey Norman. My mom would rather purchase from the Polytechnic Roadshow than other retailers. It's why I'm trying to think through this and I may need people to give their point of views on this post.

I don't think weight would matter so much since I lift heavy. I would play some games, listen to music and do assigned work on my computer. I just need a laptop that does not overheat easily, able to last long for Polytechnic and convenient for entertainment. My Polytechnic course is InfoComm Security Management and it's in SP.

I live in the uk and I’m picking computer science as my course for a levels so will it be weird to bring a gaming laptop to college because I have the hp pavilion 15 which has green led lights but even if you turn them off, the keys are still painted green and you can see it so will it be weird and has anyone done it?

I currently have a gaming PC, and I'm going to college in the fall. I was planning on buying a Macbook, but it seems that I could get a gaming PC for around the same price, with way better specs. Is it worth it to get one? Do they game well, and work well for work in college? I'm not sure if I 'll be gaming a lot, but I'd rather have it to play then not have it.

I am about to start my college for B.Tech. in Computer Science and i consider myself a pretty avid gamer. As my college starts in 2 months or so i was thinking whether to buy a gaming laptop or should I just go with a thin and light like macbook air or something. Do consider that i will be attending a residential college and will most probably not change my laptop for the next 4 years of my college.

My residential college, I mean to imply that we need direct permission from our guardian to actually leave the campus and living outside the college campus during the first year is strictly forbidden.

I'm looking at a ~$1200 MSI gaming laptop [here is a link that shows the specs: //www.msimobile.com/level3_productpage.aspx?cid=6&id=406]. I would really appreciate some advice if you think buying it is a bad idea. Should I build an ~$800 rig and get a ~$400 laptop just for class? I'm not very educated on this kind of pc-hardware stuff so I really need some help from people who know what they're talking about. Thank you so much in advance.

EDIT: I'm looking to be able to play games like Skyrim/BF3 on high settings [not necessarily max settings], and also will be needing a laptop for engineering programs/files [my major is aerospace engineering].

For starters, last summer I built a gaming desktop. However, I think I'm leaving my desktop here at home when I go to college this fall. Do you think getting a gaming laptop is worth it [i.e. longevity], or should I get a cheaper PC laptop or a laptop that I know will last a while, like a Macbook? And any recommendations for good laptops, gaming or otherwise? [
