Today, I would like to share my thoughts on the Mad Hippie Facial SPF with 30+ UVA/UVB Broad-Spectrum. This sunscreen does not use chemicals, the one active ingredient is has to protect skin from the sun is zinc oxide [non-nano] 16%. The other ingredients are carrot seed oil, avocado oil, red raspberry seed oil, vitamin C, E, and ferulic acid.
Before I discovered this product, I was using a chemical sunscreen for my face. I was using a Neutrogena sunblock, and I decided I wanted to try a product that had better ingredients and was cruelty-free, which Neutrogena is not. Their website states that they test on animals where laws regulate it.
I wanted to give my money to a company that is cruelty-free and Mad Hippie was one of the brands I’ve always wanted to try. I discovered this brand in Ulta, and thought the packaging looked very cute and earthy. It really represents the brand well.
This product has a very watery formula. The instructions recommend shaking it before use, and then applying. A little goes a long way, so definitely start small and add as needed.
Since this contains all natural ingredients and zinc oxide, it sits on the skin, rather than being absorbed into your body, like a chemical sunscreen. One of the downsides is that it leaves a white cast on your skin. I have a medium-tan skin tone, and it’s obvious when I put this sunscreen on that my face is lighter than normal [pictured below]. But, it’s easily covered up after I apply some makeup.
It does take a while to blend out, but they suggest applying a facial oil or hydrating moisturizer to help it blend out easier. This sunscreen actually makes my face feel very matte. I haven’t been wearing a primer with it, because I think it would feel too dry. I add my foundation over just the sunscreen, and it holds up very well for my entire workday.
It does have a scent, but it’s not overwhelming and it fades away very fast. Definitely double check the ingredients since it’s all natural, in case you could be allergic to any. But, physical sunscreens like this are great for sensitive skin, and they don’t irritate it like a chemical one might. My skin is oily and acne-prone, but I haven’t noticed any breakouts or irritation from this product.
I purchased mine from Ulta for about $25, which is very pricey. But, it has 2 fluid ounces, and like I mentioned, a little goes a long way.
To be honest, this is not the easiest sunscreen to work with. Leaving a white-cast on the skin, and taking a while to blend it are definitely a huge factor in mineral sunscreens. But, I really like that they’re natural, cruelty-free, and in the end, the ingredients they use are better for your skin.
Yes, chemical sunscreens are formulated to rub in easier and won’t leave your face looking white, but I like this sunscreen because of the company’s values and its ingredients. Overall, this is not the easiest sunscreen to use, but for me, I don’t mind taking a bit longer to rub it in and covering the white-cast with makeup, if it means I’m supporting a natural, cruelty-free company.
