July 3 2024 Minions

Despicable Me is the highest-grossing animated film franchise and the 15th highest-grossing film ever. Bearing this in mind, it's kind of hard to believe that the last movie starring Gru, the supervillain who managed to win audience's hearts, hit the silver screen over five years ago, in June 2017. Nevertheless, and in spite of a lack of Despicable Me movies, the franchise kept on rolling, releasing Minions: The Rise of Gru, a prequel that chronicles the origins of Gru and his connection with the Minions, on July 1, 2022. This movie features a young 11-year-old Gru, devoted fan of the supervillain group Vicious 6, who suddenly gets invited to audition after the group's leader, Wild Knuckles, is kicked out and presumed dead. Even though the interview goes badly, as Gru is ridiculed for being just a kid, he manages to steal their most treasured possession: the Zodiac Stone, which is connected to the Chinese zodiac, starting a series of persecutions and adventures that make little Gru learn what it takes to be a true villain.

Recently, the franchise made headlines again with the announcement of Despicable Me 4, which will feature the return of Chris Renaud, director of the first two films. While the plot is still unknown, it has been confirmed that the franchise's main actors will be returning to voice their characters, so Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, and Pierre Coffin are expected to participate. Despicable Me 4 is currently aiming for a 2024 release date, which marks a seven-year gap between its predecessor, the longest time between Despicable Me movies. Here's a look at why there is a significant delay in the highly anticipated fourth film in the franchise.

A Chain Reaction Leading to Delays

July 3 2024 Minions

The fourth instalment of Universal and Illumination’s animated series Despicable Me is coming to cinemas on 3rd July 2024, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Despicable Me 4 will be the sixth film in the series, which includes two Minions spin-offs.

Much of the main voice cast is returning, including Steve Carell as Gru and Kristen Wiig as Lucy. Also starring are Pierre Coffin, Miranda Cosgrove, and Steve Coogan. Chris Renaud is co-directing the film alongside Patrick Delage, who has worked as an animator on various Illumination films including The Secret Life Of Pets 2 and Sing. This marks a return to the director’s chair for Renaud, who helmed the first and second Despicable Me movies, then worked as a producer on the third and the upcoming Minions: The Rise Of Gru. The latter is set to be released on 1st July this year.

Writing the screenplay is Mike White, who is known for writing and starring in School Of Rock. He also created, wrote, and directed the acclaimed HBO series The White Lotus. While there are no details on the plot of the sequel, we do know that this year’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru will focus on the supervillain at 12 years old, trying to become evil enough to join the group The Vicious 6. However, he may end up trying to stop them instead.

Alongside the Despicable Me 4 announcement, Illumination has also given a release date to another of its upcoming projects. Migration will be arriving slightly earlier, on 30th June 2023. It focuses on a family of ducks who convince their uptight father to go on the holiday of a lifetime, visiting New England, New York City, and the Bahamas. It’s going to have tough competition at the cinemas, as its release date currently coincides with that of Disney’s Indiana Jones 5.
