Are non genuine laptop batteries safe?

Posted 30 November 2019 - 05:09 AM

Hi, I bought a Dell Inspiron 5370 laptop 13 months ago. 6 months after the purchase the battery was so bad that it was giving me about 2 hours of run time compared to 4 hours when it was new. I contacted the support and they checked through some utility in the BIOS that said battery health was poor. They replaced the battery.

Fast forward another 6 months and the same thing is happening again except I no longer have warranty and even if I did, replacing batteries every 6 months doesn't make sense. I can't beleive Dell is making this bleepty batteries. So I was thinking, should I go for a aftermarket replacement? Could they give me a better product than OEM? Are there any risks to the laptop itself?

Thanks

Aftermarket is fine, I use a aftermarket battery in my HP laptop.

Usually if its sold on a retailer like amazon its fine, but be careful around ebay.

Yes, I purchase them for other peoples' laps and they are fine. Amazon, Newegg and Ebay are good sources, but check users' reviews for an idea of quality.

I was asking myself this and in a Thread of mine here.  My opinion is that the aftermarket is not as good as the OEM, BUT, the actual cells in the battery may be newer.  I don't think the aftermarket will last as long as a NEW OEM, but will last as long as an OLD OEM that's been laying around for years.

I would think the OEM's make batteries for certain laptops all at once, therefore they just lay around till sold.  If your lucky they will make the same battery for another Newer laptop, and perhaps you can still get good new OEM batteries.

Make sure to look for a high cell count, like 8-9, I think is a good goal.  Though I do see them in new laptops today with only Three, so they may not make a 9 for yours.  They also make 12 cell, but those are high end laptops, and perhaps some older laptops.

Post your battery SN and we'll all take a look.

My laptop is quite old, so I'm very hesitant buying an OEM.  I was more interested in having someone replace the cells in the current battery, but did not get any advice on that yet.  Most likely because replacing them is a little sketchy, prying the battery apart and gluing it back together, I really don't know.

My wife has had a Lenovo laptop for 8 years and is usually plugged into the charger 24/7.  Once a week I unplug the charger and let it run until I get the system warning and then power down and plug in the charger.  It gets used daily for 12 hours.  Each battery draining lasts for 7 to 8 hours and is usually running a video stream from Prime once or twice.  It has not dropped below 7 hours since new.  I have seen batteries fail in 30 days if the don't get exercised.

Yeah, excellent way to keep them working.  All mine have been hand me downs that no one took care of.

@pcpunk

If aftermarket batteries are not as good as OEM then I bought a bleepty laptop as the OEM battery is lasting me 6 months. I had a Dell laptop before that [a cheap one] and its battery lasted me 3 years before I had to replace it [same kind of work and hours on both].

This is an ultrabook and the battery only has 3 cells and very thin and light. Its thinner than a smartphone and a little bigger than that. I saw it when it was getting replaced last time. When I called up Dell, they gave me bullbleep responses like each cell gives 15 minutes of run time so anything above 45 mins [for 3 cells] is fine. Really you expect me to have a 45 min battery backup from my laptop?

I mentioned the laptop is Dell Inspiron 5370. Are you looking for something else?

@mjd420nova

I would like to clarify on your point. My laptop is used for work [nothing heavy] for about 8 hrs daily only on weekdays. I don't keep it plugged in - it takes 2 hours to charge, I unplug it around 95% and plug it back in when battery reaches 20%. On weekends, I'll only use the laptop if there is a need to do something which would not take more than 2 hours/day.

Yes, the model, serial number or dell Service Tag is always a help.  I see it as this with the model of your laptop: Model: F62G0

dell inspiron 13 replacement battery f62g0

I feel your pain, that laptop does not get good reviews, so yes I think you did get a lemon of a pc.  There may be a better aftermarket in this situation.  To be honest I'm a little behind the times.  Most of the pc's I work on are getting quite old lol, and all mine are old.

I see Dell sells this Battery Pack to drain your pocket even more

You can take a look here as they are dell specialists, and maybe give them a call if possible.  Maybe they have a fix for this issue.  In the meantime wait and see if anyone comes up with something better.  I see them on ebay, but that is certainly the same you would get from dell.

Batteries have gotten really bad, I know, I have taken the cheap route and not bought one yet.  We really need to complain to these OEM's and tell them we won't take buying junk like this.  I expect more from Dell really.  Perhaps there is something I don't know about as a fix for this, but you spoke to Dell so I guess not.  Newer stuff is junk, I have old XP laptops with batteries that still work!

Did you update the BIOS?  It may not help but some Dell employees are saying to do this.

@pcpunk

You've been great help. Thanks.

You've got the right battery there. My service tag is "DGNDL42" btw. The parts-people don't have this in stock and it says they have the exact OEM replacement. TBH I'm not feeling confident in OEM replacement right now as I've already had 2 of those. Even if the aftermarket lasts the same amount of time, it'll be cheaper. There's a computer parts market in my city, I'm going to visit them and talk to people over there. They repair computers all the time and have parts in store, I can have them replace the battery.

My BIOS and drivers are all up to date.
