Julia Garner, who stole the seriesOzarkfrom Laura Linney as an entrepreneurial trailer-dwelling criminal, tops herself as the real-life con artist Anna Sorokin, a poor Russian woman who pretended to be a German heiress named Anna Delvey, swindling more than $200,000 from banks, five-star hotels and the cream of New York society, including lawyers, gallerists, aspiring filmmakers and ambitious journalists. Snobbish bad attitude was the key to the city. This whole story that youre about to sit on your fat ass and watch, like a big lump of nothing, is aboutme, she says in a voice-over. Im an icon. A legend. Producer Shonda Rhimes, 52 [Scandal,Greys Anatomy], fictionalizes Annas story with pulpy, soapy abandon. Anna Chlumsky is good as the reporter hunting her, but better yet are the older, age-discriminated reporters who have her back: AnnaDeavere Smith [71], Terry Kinney [68] and Jeff Perry [66]. Its two hours too long, but still irresistible to binge.
